It is necessary for tires to be made of soft rubber to achieve the traction that is needed to function well. The downside of this is that rubber will wear out with use. Worn tires are dangerous to drive on, and old tires are often just as bad. Take a look at the problems that affect old tires, and schedule a visit to your local auto tire service if you notice any.
Sidewall Separation- Sidewall separation occurs because tires form their shape from chords and wires under the rubber. These chords and wires have to be glued to the rubber with adhesives to stay in place and maintain shape. This bond can be damaged over time from use and exposure. Even if a tire is stored away from the elements, it will still break down slowly.
Cracking- Cracking is the most common effect that old age will have on tires. This symptom usually appears as small cracks, but is still potentially dangerous. Tires are under great pressure, even during normal driving conditions. This will lead to small cracks becoming larger, and a large crack will easily lead to a blow-out.
Tread Wear- Old tires may have only been slightly used and appear to have proper tread left. The problem is that old rubber doesn’t hold up the same as new rubber does. Even if a tire has perfect tread left, if the rubber is old, it will wear out quickly. Old rubber will not stick to the road either. This means that even with decent tread left, you may lose control due to a lack of traction.
Blowouts- The worst case scenario is a likely one when driving on old tires. All the previously mentioned issues often lead to a blow-out. Remember, even old tires with no signs of wear or other symptoms may pop at any time; because old rubber loses its flexibility.
